Program & Rotations

Urology Preparation Programdoctors

During the first year of your urology residency program, the emphasis is on general surgery. Frequently chosen electives are intensive care, and anesthesia. You will also rotate through the organ transplantation service.

The general surgery rotations are divided between Meriter Hospital and UW Hospital.

Urology Residency Program

The second year is spent almost entirely on the UW urology service, except for two months you will return to Meriter Hospital for a second rotation in general surgery. During your PG-2 and PG-3 years, the UW urology service consists of rotating time between the urology clinic, operating room, and the inpatient service. The surgical emphasis is on endoscopic and open surgical skills that progress with a graded level of responsibility.

The fourth year is divided into three-month rotations, alternating between Meriter Hospital and the VA Hospital, which adjoins UW Hospital. While at the VA Hospital, you are given primary responsibility for patient management and care. At Meriter Hospital you will benefit from exposure to managed care environment. You will receive significant operative experience as surgeon in all aspects of urology.

During your fifth year, the emphasis is on major operative urologic cases as the Chief Resident. The year is again divided into three-month rotations, alternating between UW and St. Marys Hospitals.

Clinical experiences will give you a broad exposure to general urology, urologic oncology, stone disease, infertility, female urology, neurourology, and pediatric urology. You will benefit from multidisiplinary clinics in each specialty, a philosophy that is strongly embraced at UW Hospital and Clinics. It will also include a high volume of experience in office-based procedures like cystoscopy with stent removals and placements, urodynamics, prostate biopsy, vasectomy, and many more.
