Unprecedented Laparoendoscopic Single-Site(LESS) Surgery on Kidney Performed at UW

Drs. Stephen Nakada and Sutchin Patel, along with the assistance of Dr. Matthew Christian, performed a LESS cryoablation of a complex renal tumor successfully at UW Hospital and Clinics this past week.

The LESS procedure allows a laparoscopic operation typically requiring three trocars to be carried out through one single incision which is less than 2 cm. While the proven benefit in convalescence as compared to traditional minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is uncertain, there are clear benefits in terms of cosmesis and further studies may indicate that the single-site surgeries will become unveiled in the future.

This exciting new trend appears to be the natural progression towards Natural Orifice Trans-Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) and even less invasive alternative treatments.
